Are electric vehicles sustainable?

Switching from diesel and petrol fuel to electric vehicles is a viable modern-day solution to help reduce emissions. Fully electric cars produce absolutely no carbon dioxide at all while driving. You can also get plug-in hybrids which combine an electric motor with a traditional fuel engine and produce some emissions.

What are electric vehicles?

With Tesla and debates about sustainable technology providing solutions to climate flying around constantly, electrical vehicles are something you have probably heard of already. So, what are electric vehicles and what’s the big deal with them?

Electric cars use electric motors that run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. They are refuelled by being charged by an external plug, and the batteries can last for 10 years+. 

Electric vehicles can potentially change our daily road transport habits and replace diesel and petrol-fuel cars. We are facing record-high temperatures from the planet heating up relentlessly, and EVs could be a feasible solution to help protect nature, endangered animals, biodiversity, and vulnerable communities from the damaging effects of climate change. 

Why are electric vehicles sustainable?

Electric vehicles are cleaner and more environmentally friendly, but how so exactly? 

Reducing carbon emissions 

Carbon dioxide warms the atmosphere to add to the greenhouse effect and generally supercharges global warming. A great deal of carbon dioxide is released when you drive petrol or diesel cars. You pump zero carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when driving an electric vehicle, therefore they are much cleaner and can help us reduce air pollution considerably. 

Just think how often you use your car to commute to work every day, collect your kids from school, see family and friends, or for work purposes. Using an electric car will therefore allow you to greatly reduce your daily carbon dioxide emissions. It is the little steps and changing your everyday habits to more sustainable ones that are vital to reducing climate change and its harmful effects. 

Improving air quality 

Many people across the planet suffer from respiratory issues as a direct result of air pollution, hence, we must do whatever it takes to improve air quality. 

Having high levels of CO2 from car emissions swirling around us all the time in the air we breathe is no good at all for ensuring that the air stays clean and reducing the likelihood of people contracting debilitating respiratory diseases. 

One of the best things about using an electric vehicle is that it helps to keep the air nice and clean. The more people use EVs, hopefully, the fresher and cleaner the air will be and the less we have to endure the prospect of breathing in dirty muggy air. 

Helping governments reach net zero targets 

Rules and legislation from the top are the best way to combat global pollution, and electric cars can help governments to reach key sustainability targets such as net zero to remove carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and achieve carbon neutrality.  

Governments and organisations across the world have been quickly realising just how much we as humans have contributed to the deterioration of the planet and global warming. For example, the mayor of London wants London to become a zero-carbon city by 2030, and he sees encouraging more people in London to use electric vehicles as part of this. Thereby, there is a 100% discount on the congestion charge for zero-emission cars meeting the criteria.

E-charging points for electric vehicles

As we have mentioned, at Magenta, we believe electric vehicles can be a key part of running a sustainable business. We put EVs at the front and centre of our green commitment by encouraging staff and customers to choose electrical vehicles. 

Each of our stores has a charging point for electric vehicles that is free for staff and customers to use. Our future plans include switching to electric vans.

Going paperless

Every year in the UK, we use over 9.9 million tonnes of paper. Recycling paper helps the planet and reduces wastage, but why not go one step further and go paperless as a business? 

At Magenta, we are all about avoiding this unnecessary wastage of paper and packaging, and with this in mind, we have ensured that the procedure for our bookings is completely paperless. You can make bookings with us hassle-free online or over the phone. 

Solar panel installation on rooftops at stores

All the rooftops at our stores have solar panels installed in a move to make them self-sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint. We use solar panels on our rooftops since they are good for the environment because they reduce greenhouse gases and enable energy independence. What’s more, using solar panels also helps to cut electricity bills. 

Support eco-friendly organisations

At Magenta, We also like to go the extra mile and provide support for organisations that are focused on doing great things to support the environment that align with our company values on the importance of sustainability. We support Alan’s Africa in Banbury, Box Aid in our Acton store and RSPCA in Nottingham.

We plant a tree for each new customer

Magenta understands that deforestation is a pressing environmental issue. So, we have decided to commit to planting a tree for every new customer we get. We are proud to say that we have planted more than 1,000 trees in the last 6 months.
