De-clutter before you deep clean your house
Right now, many rooms of your home may well be strewn with random items. It would be a good idea to sort through clutter, placing some of it into proper storage compartments around the home and the rest of it into bags labelled ‘bin’, ‘donate’ and ‘keep’.
So, what would you be putting into the ‘keep’ bag? Basically, things you can’t quite permanently part with but also don’t strictly need in your house all the time, like old photos and birth certificates. These could be stored at your nearest Magenta Storage location.

Removing dust can be a must
“Household dust can be a concern, as it may contain allergens such as dust mite faeces and pollen,” Dyson’s then-resident Advanced Research Scientist in Microbiology, Gem McLukie, told Ideal Home in April 2020. Dyson’s research suggests that mattresses, bedding, upholstery and carpets are the potential culprits for accumulating unseen dust. Their research also advises that the best way to deal with bacteria, pollen and dust mite allergens is to remove them from your home completely.
One way to do this is by using a damp cloth or cleaning wipes when dusting, as this traps the dust more easily. Apply this technique to places such as on top of kitchen cupboards where dust can often build up unnoticed.
Sofas and armchairs can also harbour dust mites, skin flakes and other allergens such as pollen and food allergens. You shouldn’t neglect to wash coverings and cushions. You should also think about vacuuming and maybe even laundering your curtains every now and then too.
Start at the top and work your way down
In other words, clean the ceilings before vacuuming the floor. That’s because, if you do the ceilings second, you will end up with dirt on the floor again and so may have to vacuum twice. To clean a ceiling, dust with a fluffy brush — first to its corners and then along the edges.
It may feel tempting to use a vacuum on the ceiling or on the walls but this isn’t recommended. Sure, it’s quicker but it can also be really easy to accidentally scratch or flake the paintwork. A fluffy brush will do the job much more effectively.
Tips for easing the task of carpet cleaning
At various places across the UK, we run self-storage facilities that clients can put to personal use. If you can barely see many of your home’s floors, you could remove much of what is currently covering them and let us keep those surplus items safe just while you get on with deep cleaning.
If those items include rugs, removing them could tragically reveal just how much cleaner your carpet was under that rug. To make amends, quickly vacuum the dirty areas before going slow and steady with a carpet cleaning machine.
How to deep clean your house’s kitchen and bathroom
Once you have attended to the bathroom’s ceiling, the tiles should be your next port of call. A steam cleaner can be a great tool for removing grime and soap scum and leaving your tiles squeaky clean and gleaming.
Meanwhile, the kitchen has an abundance of places — including the back of the sink and just behind the cooker — where stains can easily accumulate. If you notice that a wall of your kitchen has a stain, a cream degreaser would be better than a liquid one for banishing it.
