How storage helps a hospice help others
At Magenta Self Storage, we are proud to support the vital work of local charities, and this month we are putting the spotlight on our charity of the year, Katharine House Hospice. By the community, for the community
Katharine House Hospice serve the community by providing specialist support for those facing life-limiting illnesses. The staff look after 300 people at any one time in their own homes, in care homes, at the hospice, in the hospital or through their bereavement service. Their round-the-clock care extends to the families of those affected. This incredible care is open to a population of over 155,000 people in north Oxfordshire, south Northamptonshire and south Warwickshire.
The hospice is named after Katharine, a remarkably brave girl who died from cancer at just 20 years old. Following this tragic loss, Katharine’s father, Neil, and a group of friends embarked on the five year journey to commission and build a hospice that would care for people during these difficult times. What they built was not just a safe and caring place where people could spend their last moments. This tenacious and compassionate community group created an enduring philosophy of how to best look after people. They developed an ethos of care for every individual person and every individual journey, in a building where people could live as best they can until their last moments.
Living out life
Katharine House believe that those diagnosed with a life-limiting condition deserve the opportunity to live life as fully as possible. The services they offer are completely free. Katharine House only receives 25% of their funding from government sources and needs to raise the remaining 75% from donations. Since the doors first opened in 1991, they have cared for over 10,000 patients and their families. This care includes providing specialist palliative care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs.
Magenta make a difference
Magenta want to champion the vital support offered by this registered charity. Our Banbury storage site have provided valuable free self storage space to enable the hospice to take on more stock to sell in their charity shops. The hospice also use the storage facilities to accommodate donated pieces of furniture.
Tom, Helen and Charles from Magenta have also taken part in the Accumulator Challenge. The challenge require businesses, schools and colleges to take £50 and multiply it for charity. Together with the other teams this raised almost £15,000 for Katharine House! The most recent fundraising event was the Midnight Walk in July. The event involved fundraisers dressing as superheroes to walk 10 miles through Banbury at midnight.
