With the March equinox coming up fast on the 20th, it’s starting to feel like spring is finally within our reach. Spring will bring longer days, lighter evenings, and an end to the cold of winter, but it also brings the dreaded spring clean.
But spring cleaning doesn’t have to be an impossible and endless chore. Instead, it can be a time to renew and invigorate you and your space – especially after a year stuck at home. Spring cleaning shouldn’t just be looked at as a quick run around with the hoover. It’s the perfect opportunity to start over in your home, and really let go of the year before.
Here are our top tips for a productive and refreshing spring clean!
1. Schedule your spring clean.
Unless you live in a tiny house, it’ll be difficult to tackle your whole home in one day, especially if you’re planning a real overhaul. Which room needs the most work? Which room gets passed over for routine cleaning? These will be the best places to start. Make a plan for tackling each room, and start with getting rid of anything you want so that you’re not struggling for space.
2. Clean from top to bottom
The best way to make your space feel deeply cleaned is to thoroughly work from ceiling to floor. Catch the cobwebs in the rafters and in your curtains first. Then clean your walls and windows and make your way down to the floors. This method forces dust downwards, instead of just moving dust around.
3. Out with the old, in with the spring!
If your home feels like it doesn’t suit you anymore, you’re not alone. Since the start of 2020, the average homeowner has spent more than £4000 on home renovations. With everyone spending more time at home, it’s becoming more important than ever that our homes are happy spaces.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to break the bank to make your home feel bright and new. Adding new pillows, art, bedding, and plants might do the trick. If you want something more drastic, a lick of bright paint can really change the feel of a whole room.
4. De-clutter, de-clutter, de-clutter!
If a new coat of paint doesn’t cut it, it’s time to cut down on stuff. It should be no surprise that clutter can make you feel rubbish. There have been multiple studies conducted showing that clutter can actually cause real stress and anxiet. Disorganisation and mess can make it harder to stay on top of being clean and tidy too, which further adds to this stress.
Spring cleaning is the perfect time to be ruthless and ryeally get rid of items that don’t serve you anymore. Set aside time to organise your clothes and cupboards, tackle the dreaded junk drawer and tidy up your work space.
There are so many ways to spring clean with the environment in mind. A steam cleaner is a great place to start, as they trade nasty chemicals for heat whilst still packing a punch.
If you’re not willing to shell out for a steam cleaner, there are plenty of switches you can make to keep your cleaning green. There are many environmentally friendly cleaning products available in superstores, but you can also make your own. One of the best natural combos is baking soda, distilled vinegar and water. These ingredients are non-toxic and affordable (and probably in your pantry already!). The best part is that you know they’ll work as they’ve been used in cleaning for decades.
The best thing you can do really though is cut down on waste that ends up in the landfill. On average we throw away 70lbs of clothing per person each year. Donating your unwanted items is a great way to avoid this. If you’ve got too much stuff and not enough space, self storage is a great option as it means you get easy access to your belongings without them being always under your feet.
