1 Clean It
Hopefully your dress has made it through the day without too many wine stains and muddy footprints, but your first stop should be the dry cleaner.
Have the dress cleaned after the wedding by a professional dry cleaner who specialises in cleaning wedding dresses. Check the dress is insured against damage.

2 Protect It
You don’t want your dress to fade or get discoloured and you will also want to protect it against dust, mildew and insects. The best way to protect your dress after cleaning is to store it away from heat, light and damp. Climate controlled storage is perfect.

3 Pack It
Choose a storage box which will eliminate light, protect from dust and accident, be of a breathable material (not plastic as this can let in light and can cause condensation/mould over time) and be pH neutral containing no acid or alkali. Tissue paper needs to be pH neutral too. The box needs to be secure, so insects can’t get in and be big enough, so the dress won’t be squashed or creased too much.
4 Store It
Each dress is different, so ask the retailer if there are any specific storage instructions for your particular dress. They will also supply a garment bag but check if it’s suitable for long term storage.
5 Check It
Once packed away, check on the dress every year or so to ensure nothing untoward has happened to it. Unpacking the dress and repacking carefully can help prevent any creases becoming too permanent. You may even be tempted to try it on!
6 Cherish It
Be smart about where you store it. Once you’ve carefully packaged your dress, be sure to store it somewhere safe away from extreme temperatures, light and humidity. Avoid the loft as temperatures in this space can fluctuate and cause problems.
