At Magenta, as a storage provider also offering a van hire service, we play a significant role in providing customers with first-rate self storage solutions before, during, and after their house move. We try to play our part in making home movers’ lives easier. With our experience in this field, we have created these insights into how to settle into a new home.

Carry on reading to discover more about how to settle into a new home.

Get to know your neighbourhood and local surroundings

Maybe you’ve stayed in the same area when moving house, or you’ve moved to an area where you’ve spent an extended amount of time living in the past. But perhaps you have moved to an entirely different neighbourhood you haven’t lived in before. In this case, you’ll have to make an effort to get to know your new neighbourhood and local surroundings.

A fun way to get to know your neighbourhood better and strike up connections near your new home can be by joining local clubs, attending events in the area, checking out local shops, cafés and restaurants, joining an allotment, or whatever takes your fancy! You may meet some lovely people along the way that you could go on to be good friends with.

Give your new abode a personal touch

When you’re settling into your new pad, it’s important to give it a personal touch. This may include putting up cute decorations, furniture, furnishings, wall art, ornaments, painting walls, and more.

You can of course already start thinking about major renovation plans such as extensions soon after you move in, but you may have to put these on the back burner so you can allow yourself some time to get used to the place and know what you really want to do with it.

After all, major structural home renovations filled with your own personal touches can make your new home look amazing and be a real upgrade, but they require a lot of thought and won’t come cheap!

Get to taking care of repairs or maintenance issues early on

Sometimes homes with a few repairs or maintenance issues that need sorting cost you a little less money to purchase. Have you got major repairs and maintenance issues staring you in the face when you move into your new home? Maybe one of the walls is damaged and needs replastering immediately, or the bathroom sink is a bit leaky. To help you settle into your new home, it’s a bright idea to ensure important repairs and maintenance issues are addressed properly and professionally sooner rather than later.

Taking care of repairs and maintenance issues to settle into your new home is especially crucial if you have got a young family. You want your kids to be safe when playing around at home. We all know just how clumsy they can be!

Be patient – it takes a while to settle into a new home

Moving home is a big change and one that can take a fair while for you to get acclimatised and settle in nicely into your new pad. So, don’t worry if you have only just moved in and are still a bit unsure about home decor, what to do with your outdoor space, and how you want each room to look. There’s no need to rush into things.

Introduce yourself to your new neighbours

Settling into a new home is always more pleasant if you are able to try and form a good relationship with your new neighbours from early on. You could get to know your new neighbours by:

  • Having a party or gathering at your new place and inviting them along
  • Baking them some sweet treats or a nice wholesome meal
  • Introducing your children to theirs (if you both have both children of similar ages)
  • Having a friendly chat over the garden hedge or fence

We human beings are sociable creatures, and being neighbourly is as important now as it ever was.

Try allowing as much light into your new home as possible

Allowing as much light into your home as you can during the daytime will make your home feel happier and brighter, ensure you get enough vitamin D, support your indoor plants, and also help you get into a sleep cycle routine.

So, paint your walls white or bright colours that reflect the light, hang mirrors opposite windows to bounce light around the room, and avoid placing large items of furniture in front of windows where they can obstruct the light from coming in. These are a few savvy ways to let as much into your new home as possible when you’re trying to settle in.

Keep your home clean and tidy

Getting your home arranged and organised nicely is a big part of settling into your new home. You will feel unsettled if soon after moving in your home becomes cluttered.

One of the keys to making your home clean and tidy and maintaining this way it is to come up with practical storage solutions. The following are a few handy ways to store your clothes neatly and avoid the dreaded ‘floordrobe’ situation:

  • Floating shelves
  • Built-in shelving units
  • Pegboards
  • Over the door hooks
  • Wall hanging baskets
  • DIY wooden shoe and towel racks
  • Use under the bed space as storage
  • Draw dividers

Home design and storage are connected to your wellbeing

A research study in 2021 found that getting your home design and storage right is connected to the wellbeing and happiness of the inhabitants. So, you should feel more comfortable and nicely settled in once you have organised your home in a way which incorporates your storage needs properly.
